Simple way of solving change of speech question and answer with tips

This session will help you to know more about the verbal aptitude called ‘CHANGE OF SPEECH’. Change of speech is nothing but changing the speech from either direct speech to indirect speech or indirect speech to direct speech.

What is called change of speech?

In these questions, a sentence will be given either  in direct speech or indirect speech.

We need to change the sentence into indirect speech if it is in direct or into direct if the sentence is indirect.

There will be four options given along with the question. You have to choose the more relevant sentence from the option. 

What is direct speech?

The message of the speaker is conveyed or reported in his own actual words without any change is called direct speech.

For example: Ram said “I ate an apple”.

NOTE: In direct speech there will always be a double quotation marks for the message delivered by the other person.

What is indirect speech?

The message of the speaker is conveyed or reported in our own words is called indirect speech.

For example: Ram said that he ate an apple.

NOTE : In indirect speech, there will not be any quotations marks for the message delivered by the other person. But it will be replaced by the word ‘that’.

What are the rules for speech punctuation?

The direct speech will always have a double quotation for the message delivered by the other person. But indirect speech will not have any quotations.

The sentence is very similar like a normal sentence. But the meaning of the sentence will not change at any cause if you change the speech of the sentence.

Examples of change of speech

1. The teacher told Maria that she was not working hard.

  1. The teacher says to Maria, “You are not working hard.”
  2. The teacher said to Maria, “You are not working hard.”
  3. The teacher said Maria, “You are not working hard.”
  4. The teacher said to Maria,” She is not working hard.”

Answer: Option B

2.  Her mother ordered her to go to the kitchen and cook food.

  1. Her mother said,”Go to the kitchen and cook food.”
  2. Her mother said her, “Go to the kitchen and cook food.”
  3. Her mother tells,”Go to the kitchen and cook food.”
  4. Her mother asked,” Go to the kitchen and cook food.”

Answer: Option A

3. He said that his sister was getting married.

  1. He said, “His sister is getting married.”
  2. He said, “My sister was getting married.”
  3. He told, “His sister was getting married.”
  4. He said, “My sister is getting married.”

Answer: Option D

4. The mother said,”Who dare call you a cheater?”

  1. The mother told that who dared call her a cheater.
  2. The mother asked who called her a cheater.
  3. The mother enquired who dared call her a cheater.
  4. The mother said that who dare call her a cheater.

Answer: Option C
